My Daddy in the Glass

This stark, but poignant tale is the story of Tonisha Ray and her father. It may not be suitable for all ages as it contains violence. It portrays some of the harsh realities faced in the African-American community. Tonisha’s father and mother split-up when she was very little, leaving her mother bitter and hating her father. She, however remembers him as a strong, loving father, who doted on her. Her memories of him are all positive, yet because of the enmity caused by the break-up of the family, she cannot share her memories or feelings toward him. She sees his refection in the glass of a store window one day, but when she turns he is gone. She returns to the same place and is accosted by a group of young men. Her father comes to her aid, but is injured and arrested in the process. They later meet, but again are separated by a sheet of glass. He is finally arrested one day on murder charges, and later is himself murdered in prison. Tonisha ends the tale by saying how, when seeing strangers reflections in glass storefronts, she so wishes to see her daddy in the glass. The purpose of the book is to remind us all that everyone has worth. That there is no one incapable of loving, or being loved.
